Historic Preservation
2012
Too often the term “old,” when describing buildings, is intended to mean obsolete, or undesirable. The patterns of use and care for the historic architecture in downtowns across America have an inverse relationship with the proliferation of typical development practices. To address the undervaluation of the city’s built heritage and preserve the character embodied in the downtown architecture, which has traditionally been a place of commercial, residential, and cultural life, we decided to provide free design services to assist building owners who were interested in restoring their buildings to take the steps necessary to see the potentials of their assets. We sent out mailings to the owners of buildings of note offering our services. We received a good response, which resulted in new drawings for residential lofts, entertainment, manufacturing, and other commercial spaces including this facade work.
